Hi All, I just got hold of a bunch of norway maple and was wondering if that is considered a hard or soft maple. It was free so it is good wood i know. thanks Wally

Soft maple to the best of my knowledge. Excellent to turn and you can often get some nice knarly wood from the base of the trunk as well as "pre-spalted" turning stock. This is really a weed tree around here...the aggressiveness mentioned in the material Roy linked to is spot-on. I've taken down quite a few on our property, either because they were in the wrong place or because they were no long safe to have around.

A soft Maple and an invasive species that crowds out native trees. Good for turning though as they all should be cut down due to their prolific invasive nature.;):eek::D
