View Full Version : OOPS! - What Did I Break?

I thought I'd make a disc sander from one of the extra motors around the shop. The 1750 RPM choices ended up a 1/2 hp or a 1/6 hp. I thought the 1/2 would be overkill. To test if the 1/6 hp was strong enough for my intended use, I mounted it to a workbench, mounted a pulley to a 9" x 3/4" plywood disk, added sandpaper and mounted that on the shaft of the motor. Everything worked great! until...

All of a sudden, something broke. A bearing, a seal, I don't know what, but not the shaft has a 1/16" lateral (in and out) play.

I don't know if this is important but the motor was made by Wagner Electric in St. Louis MO. "Type RB" and the Frame is "57V." I'd guess it its at least 40 years old, but ran great (very smooth) when I started.

Now there's lots of vibration. Can someone suggest what happened and how do I fix it? And then, where I might get repair parts?

Thanks in Advance,
Robert

The thing to do is use the 1/2 HP motor. The 1/6 is going to be way underpowered anyway.
