I recently bought a Stanley #5 type 17(I think). It's in very nice shape, but I was thinking of using the frog from a type 11, since it's a more supportive design. I have an 11 in poor shape, with a good frog, so it makes sense. Are they interchangeable? Thanks!

I would have to go look at a couple of planes in my shop. I am not sure if the seating is the same.

The best way would be to just take the time and put them together. Check the two frogs bases against each other before trying and see what happens.

A quick look at Johnny Kleso's type study seems to make me think it would work.

Some folks would say, "No, don't make another Frankenplane!"

Matt,

As Jim says, try it; if it works, it works.

What makes you think that the old-style frogs are somehow better?

But the machined mating surface the iron rides is much larger on the older plane

From Type 9 up they use the same basic seat design althought there are three different looks..
