How does your AAW Chapter handle Liability Insurance?????
I Know the AAW covers you personally if your a AAW Member.
What I want to Know is do your Clubs Carry any GENERAL PUBLIC LIABILITY. To cover anyone visiting your Club, Like say if you have a Club OPEN HOUSE,. and say someone visiting trips over a chair falls on a cement floor and beraks a hip or leg ect...
How are you covered for these situations????
Are Club has Growing pretty fast ( at almost 100 Members) and has just Leased a new Building for our Club.
Previously we we covered by the building owner who let us meet at his building. Now your not sure of how to Cover our Libility needs.
Thanks.

Joe, your club officers should speak with the AAW administrators about this. I believe that the association can provide access to the necessary coverage, but am not 100% sure on that.

From what our President told us, as long as the officers of the club
are members of AAW then you are covered for demo's & visitors etc.
But you should still check with the AAW.

Joe:
Our club carries a separate liability policy for this purpose. It's really pretty cheap and covers all of the scenarios you mention and more. To be honest, I always thought it was overkill but our landlord requires the separate policy as a requisite for our lease. Probably wouldn't do it otherwise.

Our club is a general woodworking club (both turners and non-turners) and we carry a separate liability insurance policy. In addition to liability, our policy covers theft (if our tools or other assets are stolen) and fire (if we damage the location where we meet). It is not cheap - about $550 per year.

It's the understanding of our club President. who recently called AAW that if you are not a AAW member You Are Not Covered At All. Only Members are covered. There is No Coverage on any Visitors or Guest at all from the AAW.
This is the reason I'm asking how other Chapters handle the Liability issue.

Here is a quote from the AAW journal...

"To put this in plain language, the policy covers each chapter and
each AAW member, so long as they are performing chapter approved activities. Note that chapter members who are not AAW members, are neither
covered nor protected by the policy. Members are not covered for their own private activities."

So, it appears to me, to be covered one must be involved inapproved CHAPTER ACTIVITIES (demos, meetings, etc.) AND be a MEMBER OF AAW not just a member of your local club.
