This is a pic of the first bowl I have completed. I am excited. Just yesterday this was a dead limb that had fallen from a tree in my yard. I think it is very cool to be able to take something that would have been put on the burn pile and make a bowl out of it.

Eugene that is a great looking bowl. Yes it is a great feeling looking at a piece of firewood and turning into something like you did.

And so it begins....

Great looking first bowl Eugene! Nice form! What's the dimensions? Is the wood Cherry? Make sure you sign it and hang onto it because you will be amazed at how much your turnings change in a years time!

Have fun with it! Looking forward to seeing bowl #2!

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments. I forgot to put the wood species and deminsions. The deminsions are 2-3/8" X 6-7/8" and the wood is Sweet Gum. The photo looks more orange in color than the wood really is.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the encouragement.

Kinda cool ain't it. Makes you look at things in completely different way. Great job. Hang on tight though, this vortex get a little costly if you’re not careful. I myself am on the edge but slipping fast. Oh well they say the man who dies rich is a poor spender.

Eugene:
It is a great hobby. Instant gratification or instant despair! I have found that you develop an eye for "found" wood. I call it road kill.;) I have friends calling to tell me of "some good looking" wood they saw.
Great looking bowl. Keep the pics coming.
All the best.

Be proud, Eugene! Not only did you turn a fine bowl, but you chose to turn a very difficult form with the relatively straight sides and a sharp transition to what appears to be generally a flat bottom. That's hard to do well even when you have some experience.

Nice work!

Very nice job, Eugene. Does make me wish I had started turning years ago - before I cut down 3 60 yr old sweetgums in my yard. But I am glad the gumballs are gone.

Very nice bowl. Wait till you drive through a wooded area, and start looking at the trees and seeing the turnings you can make from them!:)

Hello everyone, thanks for looking and for the comments and encouragement. It looks like it is about to stop raining. I can go cut wood for bowl blanks so I can practice more.
