Brian, this is a project that comes up a lot here and there are some really good examples of flip-tops.

From the menu bar above, seach the forums (second box down from the top). You'll find all kinds of good information.

One of the most recent threads was: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=91236 which shows a great idea for locking the top in place.

Be well,

Doc

Don's on target here Brian. The size varies so much based on what will sit on each side, where it will be stored, how high other surfaces are in your shop (to take advantage of support areas) that specific plans may not help much.

My latches (see Don's link) and caster cleats came from "the Complete Small Shop" from August Home Publications. The rest I built based on my requirements. Wood magazine and others have had plans as well. . . . let me see . . . Googled "flip top stand" and found these:

and here's a set of specific plans: http://www.woodstore.net/flwoce.html

Don thanks for the help and the links Glenn, I have some good ideas from them and just might model mine from one of theirs.

I have a one tool flip stand, I need the space.
It was really cheap to build.

Here is the thread.

That is very cool Bill. Really tucks out of the way ;-)

I made one of those flip top tool stands from August home publishing
"Complete Small Shop". I made a major modification to their design, instead of using a dowel as a pivot on each side of the flip top, I installed
a solid steel rod all the way thru (side to side) to make the top stronger
and more reliable. On the steel rod I welded a large washer on one end,
the other end I drilled a hole thru the rod, installed a washer and a removal hitchpin. This makes the rod removable if needed, and easier to
make changes also. I originally had a benchtop planer on 1 side and 10"
bandsaw on the other. I changed it to a chopsaw in place of the bandsaw and left the planer on the other side. The larger/ heavier machine on 1 side makes it harder to rotate from one side to the other.

You should carefully consider what machine you will use and how to mount them and the usage they will get before installing them on a rotating top tool stand. They all have good and bad parts/ advantages
and disadvantages. Put machines that will balance each other out as much as possible. Jim Heffner

I hope there isn't a patent on your stand Bill. I think you solved a major problem for allot of us looking to save space. I've got a 15" planer/molder that gobbles up a ton of floor space in my shop and I have been looking for a place to stow it. Now that I've seen your flip top stand I know exactly what I'm going to do. I'll have to change up the mobile base for casters and add some levers, but other wise I love what you've come up with. My planer/molder weighs in just a tad shy of 150, think your design will hold it? From the looks I think it would.
