I have an old J-Line lathe that works quite well. The only problems I have are 1) the threads on the headstock seem to be too short for a Talon chuck to be attached tightly, and 2) the handle used to lock down the tool rest holder to the bed doesn't work requiring me to manually tighten it down with a wrench. Any suggestions?

Take some pics of the banjo (tool rest holder) and underneath. How long is the spindle nose?

I don't know but I am willing to bet that you need a shim or such to make sure the back of the chuck is seating well. I had to do that with my lathe.

Yes some good pictures certainly would give us more to go on, and help us to give you some advice.

I have an American Yates, and there is a nut on the bottom of the banjo clamp assembly that affects the clamping pressure when using the handle. If the parts of this system are in good repair, and adjusted, the clamping action is better than my 3520.
