Beginning canoeist designs

Looking for plans for a wood strip or stitch & glue canoe for 2 beginning canoeists. I've a few strippers under my belt although it's been a while and I'm just testing the waters on new designs. Something around 15-16' should work fine. My son & new wife are hoping to start canoeing in the spring so this is one of my winter projects.:)

I don't have any strip building under my belt, (although my belt is plenty big:o) but I built a boat and I've looked at plans for canoes. I like this model from Northwoods Canoe:

I've got a lot more experience paddling kayaks than canoes, but it would appear this would be a pretty stable boat for beginners. I've never liked the smaller 15 and 16 ft. boats, they always seem tippy to me.

When I get the half done 15 ft. sailboat finished, I can start finishing the half done 18 ft. kayak hanging from my rafters done, then I'm gonna' build one of those nifty teardrop trailers, and finally, my wife wants a canoe. Guess what will stay half done and what will get built sooner?? :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Try Bear Mountain Boats, lots of canoe plans and a great book Canoecraft by Ted Moores. Also try Newfound Woodworks, I know they make kits, I believe they also have plans available.

What type or design of 15' sailboat are you building? I see your in East Jordan, MI. Did you ever make the Great Lakes Small Craft Symposium in Saginaw that was run for a few years?

Thanks for the info, The Cottage Cruiser from Bear Mt. Boats looks very interesting. It won't be spring until boat is finished although I'll post pics. I have the revised edition of Canoecraft and it's excellent.

If you haven't already decided,the Winisk from John Winters is my next, he designs some very easy to paddle boats. My first try one his Osprey (solo boat), it's still my favorite.

Here's my version of the Prostpector design from Bear Mountain boats.
I did it in mahogany and each decorative strip is comprised of 196 individual pieces. It's trimmed in ash. The yoke is a glue up of scraps.

If you're concerned about "tippi-ness" (is that a word) with the beginners, one of the canoes designed for fishing or birding might work. B and B Yacht Designs has several models that are relatively easy stitch and glue designs (Graham there even has a Shop-bot now and I know he was planning on making pre-cut panels for them). I've known several people who built the "Birder" model and love it.

I have to put the canoe plans on hold as my Son's wife is with child. I'm currently looking at a set of "Boat Cradle" plans. Seems a bit more appropriate.....Thanks all the same. I'm knowledgable of Graham's plans, He does very nice work.
