I finished both of these sets about a week ago, they're the first finished bowls since my bandsaw accident way back in April. I've done a handful of pens since then and roughed a number of bowls but these are the first finished since 4/20/08.

The wood is a very common wood but isn't turned on a regular basis. Anyone that doesn't already know (Mike, Kevin) feel free to guess.

I don't really know what grows in your area, but seeing all the little knots and the look of the wood, I'd guess it be a juniper or something like that, you certainly did a nice job on it, the Aspen looks like it was a very slow growing one, also a nice set :-))

Don't know but those are some good looking turnings. The nesting set I am guessing you cored? Well done.

Nice work on everything Jason! First piece has a very interesting form - pretty cool! Also like the nested set - very pretty wood!

Both of the "mystery" pieces came from the same blank as did the nested set of 3 aspen bowls. I core everything I possibly can. The wood does not grow locally here in AZ that I'm aware of although it is readily available almost everywhere though not usually in sizes suitable for bowl work.

Wild guess: Mesquite? Bear in mind I'm in Northeastern US.

Looks like a Douglas Fir burl or something closely related.

My guess is some form of cypress.

Thuja or arborvitae?

We have a winner, way to go Curt! It is a Douglas Fir burl.

I purchased it from Irwin Wright of High West Wood Products earlier this year. Hard to believe that this is the same wood that gives us most of out 2X4s.
