Fixin a piano stool or bench

I have repaired one piano bench / stool for our church that didn't require any finishing work. HOWEVER.......I have another one from our church that WILL need a lot of work to get it back in service. Ya know the nice shinny black finish on a piano stool or even the piano? How does one produce this finish?

I've always assumed it was black lacquer. I could be wrong. I thought I was once before, but I was mistaken. :D

I've been happy with CrystaLac waterborne finishes (McFeely's has it) in being able to reproduce that glass-smooth, about a mile deep finish seen on pianos. You don't have the nasties associated with spraying lacquer. Give some a shot and see what you think.
