I've seen a lot of people pick up and restore tools that school districts are clearing out of their shop classes. Is there somewhere that I can find out when these types of auctions/sales are coming up in my area?

This site is pretty good, but your local school system may not use it. FL, UT, CA, CO has had a whole lot of machines go up on the block. School auctions are a great place to find old cast iron.

Likely any auctions will be in your local paper, generally in the Sunday edition. Pick it up and check every week, problem is when looking around the country they seem fairly frequent, but the likelyhood of having one local to you is reduced by how many technical schools you have nearby that are also closing their woodshop program. In other words you may look for years and not find anything that was very close. Of course it doesn't hurt to look:D
