I picked up some logs today. The bark is kind of nasty but the wood looks nice.

Any ideas what this wood is?

This picture is covered with mineral oil.

Any ideas? I turned the bark off some and made them into round sections to store, wax and dry faster. Thanks for your time.

The pile loks like maple, but the oiled wood is a mystery. Good luck, and happy shavings.:)

Looks like elm from here. It is nice to turn but it can be a bit stringy. Might want to keep the tools sharp.

Radek - congrats on the wood! No matter what it is - make sure you seal it ASAP!

The owner said it was elm but wasn't sure. I want to get a couple more opionions. Is it just me, or does the stuff smell?

If it is Elm yes it does smell. It looks like Elm to me. I would get it sealed as soon as possible.

Is elm a nice or good turning wood? The smell is FUNKY!

Yes elm does turn nicely, like previously stated, kinda stringy. The smell reminds me of cat urine, especially if turned green. After it dries, the smell goes away.

Elm it is!Has a wet dog smell to it. You will also find a tough fiberous layer between the bark and sap wood. When I hit that layer the first time I thought I had lost the edge on my gouge and was turning with a screwdriver! Once through this layer turning returns to normal. Great wood for turning. Once completed it takes a good finishand sands well. Looking forward to a pic of a finished piece from your stash...Bill...

Just as William is saying, and the smell will disappear when dry, I like it to.
