I have a friend whose front doors are made from vertical cedar planks. From the front it looks like tongue and grove. They are red cedar and are about 2 inches thick. I understand these are made by inserting steel threaded rods vertically in order to prevent warping.

Anyone here know how these are made. They look quite nice.

Thanks

These are commonly referred to as a ledger door if i am reading you right. Many I have seen not only have splines between the vertical pieces, but also have a horizontal splines in the backside. There was a discussion about a failed door similar to this on the Woodweb not long ago. They are not as prone to vertical movement so I dont see a pre-tensioning rod being of great use, but warpage is a problem given the typical grain orientation. Personally, I agree the doors are nice but I dont think they are practical in poor exposure cases if you want to make them out of solid stock. You can find some details of this door in Robert Langs Craftsman Detail book.
