Resin impregnated wood

Does anybody here know how to make resin impregnated wood? I'm thinking of using it for the butt end of a pool cue, where people usually use phenolic.

I would think that a vacuum pot, some slow set epoxy, and piece of wood would get you there. Might get messy though - epoxy foam doesn't sound too fun.
