Does any one know of an adapter that will allow you to use a bit with a square head (like the one found on old auger bits) in a modern cordless drill? I have been looking for a while and come up with nothing?

I took an old ratcheting brace apart to do that with.

Evan, even if you can, it might not be a good idea. The metal in the bit might not be up to the torque that the modern cordless drill/driver can exert. The design of the "business end" of those old drills was also optimized for hand work, too.

Thanks for the advice. Part of the problem is that I even have some new bits with the configuration. So I'm not really sure what I'm going to do but if I find an adapter I will be sure to set the torque setting on the chuck.

That's electricity and grunticity.

These will have the square taper, and, often, just below it, a hex shank. The idea is that, if you're using them in an electrically driven tool, you hacksaw off the square taper. If you find one like this, it has been, I assume, tempered for both applications.
