A few years ago I bought a book and knives so I could learn chip carving but soon realized I didn't have the nack for it. Two weeks ago I gave the knives and book to a friend and this is her first attempt. done on basswood.

Let me know what you think.http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=7443&stc=1

Looks like a very decent piece of work to me, David, particularly for a novice chip carver. I, personally, don't like chip carving (by that, I mean actually doing it) but I enjoy looking at and admiring it. SWMBO is the chip carver in this household.

Anyhow, it's a simple but very pleasing design. From what I can tell from the photo, the cuts are clean (very important) and everything is symmetrical. I'd say she has a great future as a chip carver and I encourage her to keep at it. She will only get better and the designs will get more complex with time and practice. Again, a very good job.

'Ya know, I'm getting really sick and tired of seeing all of these "first attempts" at something, which look like people have been doing them for a long time! If *any* of my "first attempts" looked even close to that good, I'd be a happy camper! Very nice, especially to Mr. All Thumbs over here! I think she should be encouraged to continue, as she appears to have a knack for it!
