I have considered trying to automate intricate inlay / marquetry work. The biggest working envelopes would be 12 x 9". I would think for accuracy, a CNC milling machine is the right tool, not a flat bed CNC. Agreed?

Any good resources / web sites for CNC inlay and marquetry work?

I have a small cnc milling machine and a flatbed cnc machine. For the style of work I think you are looking for I would think a milling machine would be more the ticket. My reason is the spindle speed can be set easier than a small router could and can be. I've had Bit burn with the router and not with the mill. Also you have to be careful on bit purchase.
will try to answer any questions you have if I can.

Ken, I figured a CNC MIll is the right approach....

What spindle speed is desireable for cutting thin veneers?

My thought was.... laminate the veneer to something like Balsa wood, so you have some added meat the blade can cut to prevent tear out.

the hardest part of running the milling machine is the hold down.
the veneers would tend to rise and not cut as you want.
you are right on using the wood as a substrate.
and again the hold down tight to the bed is important.
as for speed
the slower you go the more likely you are to raise the piece
but to fast will burn the wood
how about a happy medium :D
