I think it's time to see if I can get a Hand Plane Class going for this fall.....

I am thinking it will not be a Hand Plane Refinishing Class but just a Sharpening, Tuning and Methods Class

This summer the folks that showed up I think would have much more enjoyed some hands on instruction than refinishing class..

Anyone intresed please PM me and include your email addy for a list..

I'm retired due to an injury so most any weekend is good for me, I'm thinking in a week or two but open to any date..

Johnny, I've been struggling to try and get more out of my hand planes. I have a few that got passed down to me after my great uncle died and I have never been able to get much out of them. I also have a LN medium shoulder plane that I love and use often but I would absolutely love some instruction on the old stanleys I have. I live in Norcross GA and would glady drive a couple of hours to learn how to better utilize my tools. Allen Koriakin

I just took a lass at Woodcraft in Atlanta last weekend. It was pretty good the only problem was that they asked everyone to being in a place and we tuned them all. Some of the planes took longer than others.

Oh brother... I sure wish I were closer to you Johnny. I'd be there in a heartbeat if I weren't two time zones away.

I'm very jealous of those that are closer and can attend.

And a tip o' the cap to folks like you, that reach out to teach the rest of us!

The methods part sounds like a great idea. When I was starting out I was able to figure out the sharpening and tuning by myself in a short amount of time. When it came to actually putting the planes to use, that took a lot longer to figure out on my own.

OK,
I'm thinking Nov. 1 or 2 what ever is best for the most people coming..

I will have all my Three Grinders and Buffer out for use for those that want to sharpen some blades after the tune up class..

I want to make this shorter then the last class with more hands on..

I also have many of my planes out to try to see how they work, if you have any Premium please bring them for others to and me to try :)

I own a No4 Clifton, LN No93 and a LN No140

Johnny,

Nov 1st sounds good to me, but I think I can be flexible.

Any car pooling ideas from the west/north west side?

All I have to bring are my Veritas junkers.... will they work? :p:p:p

Johnny, this sounds interesting, do you allow old students to return for another class? Nov. 1st does not work for me, but I could probably make Nov 2nd work. Please don't set that date just for me, as our schedule could change between now and then.

Ken

I would rather it be on Nov 2 since, but could make it Nov 1 if that works for everyone else.

Hello Folks,
I am planning class for the 2nd of Nov. Sunday of this week…

I would like class to at 11am talk for awhile about tuning planes them eat lunch hamburgers and potato salad and coleslaw and tea or soda.

I’ll then give a quick demo of planning and show how I use my grinders and bench stones for sharpening…

Then I let everyone try out some of the planes and them let all use the grinders to sharpen their plane blades and help setup students planes

Johnny,

It was a pleasure meeting you, Mike, Larry and Allen. Thanks for letting us into your house and viewing your great collection of handplanes. My wife couldn't believe how well the #7 looked and worked when I got home. Had a chance to play with it a little late last night and its working great.

What I really liked was talking to other woodworkers about their experiences. I wouls highly recommend going to the class if and when Johnny does it again. Their's nothing better than learning something new about woodworking while being outside in such great weather!

I had a great time tuning up my old stanley 4 and 5 and learning how to use them properly was the cherry on top. It's nice to meet so many nice people in my neck of the woods. I just wanted to thank John for his hospitality and willingness to pass on some great knowledge to his fellow Creekers. I wish I had taken some before pictures of my stanley 4 and 5 before John tuned them up. They not only look great but they work even better. Now I just need to find a few projects where I can put them to use. I need to run out and get some batteries for my camera so I can take a few picture of the planes that we worked on.

Thanks again John and good luck with that back
