do any of you know a good source to buy crushed/powdered turquoise? I have a chunck of sycamore that will need several cracks filled and I thought I would try dressing it up. Searchs online were harder than I thought it would be. nothing on the big auction site and the only retailer I found had it at $10 per ounce (thought that was high but maybe not)---as usual help is appreaciated

John, take a look at http://www.gilmerrockshop.com/servlet/the-Crushed-Rock/Categories. I ordered turquoise from there once before and it was a good experience. Other than being a satisfied customer, I'm not associated with the company.

I also heard good things about Gilmer and I ordered from them yesterday. 16 oz of turquoise was $16 plus $5.25 shipping. (Yes, $4 per 4 oz bag) I will let you know how it goes when it gets here.

John, Colbaugh Processing will sell you floor sweepings, which is clean, unstabilized Turquoise nuggets. You can crush it yourself. Call (928) 565-4650, and ask for Josh Colbaugh. Tell him you need some floor sweepings. When I bought from him, it was $15 per pound, and they had a 3 pound minimum purchase. If you turn a lot, you'll use it. I traded away a couple of pounds of it, thinking I wouldn't need that much, and now am almost out again.
PS: If you want I'll post a pic of my Turquoise Crusher.

John - just about every rock shop in the country carries turquoise, so, I would suggest calling around locally and seeing what is available.

This is about 6" square x 1/3/8" deep. The bottom and insert are made out of about 1/2" plate. The sides of the box are 3/16" thick, or so.
I've since turned a new handle for the hammer.
I place a few stones about marble size into the box. Place the insert on top, and knock the hound out of it, hitting the Railroad Spike knob.
Then I hit it all around, close to the knob, and pour it through a tea strainer. Took me about 15 minutes the other day to crush a baby food jar full.

Hello guys,
It seems like Gilmer is out of business. I could be wrong about this but there website seems to not be there any longer and their ebay store is no longer listed either. I' ve been try doing web searches for a while now and have not been able to get onto their sites.

Not many places to purchase the Turquoise crushed stone. Been searching but only found one or two places.

Robert I see that you ordered from them a few days ago. Interesting since i'm not able to access the ebay store or their web page. please advise how you ordered and if you ordered by phone?

Turquoise CrusherI use a 3/4 inch black pipe about 6 inches long with a cap screwed onto one end. Put in the turquoise nuggets and use a 1/2 inch bar to hammer/crush the turquoise in the bottom. Sift through a screen to get the size you want and re-crush the larger pieces.

This works for me.

Ben, a few days ago? It's a 5 year old thread! Craft Supplies carries it. Rather expensive at $10.75/Oz. Seems to be the going rate though.

I bought a few turquoise necklaces at Michael's when they were marked at 50% off. Some of them have about a dozen large rough beads. I forget the price, but they ended up being about $3-4 each. They are stabilized, so they are quite hard and it took some pounding to crush them. I use them to fill in the worm holes in some small oak bowls.

You can buy direct from overseas..... MUCH cheaper than here in the USA, and probably where most American dealers are buying from and then reselling at very very high profit!
Like $40.13 for 500 grams (17+ oz) with free shipping via UPS

Alibaba is a very well known site for sourcing overseas products. Here's a link to their site and additional links to some of their referenced suppliers... (Mostly from China)

Forget the web. Try the telephone - 480-963-6552. Just talked with Fred at this number. Still in business. All turquoise - natural and man made - packed in 4 oz bags. Grades offered = powder, small sand, large sand and extra large sand. Man made = $15.00/bag. Natural = $30.00/bag. - John

I've tried several crushers and they all worked but slowly. Buy a yardsale blender or Wal nut store cheapie and shake it while "blending". Don't use your bride's blender --ever. Buy several strainers also.

One of the members of our woodturners club told me the way he crushes his turquoise is to buy a cheap electric coffee bean grinder (the kind with the pulse switch) and just put some chunks in there and turn it on. crush to the consistency you want it, then run it through the micro strainer.

i use the same approach but with a slightly larger pipe. i also use a coffee grinder. in all cases i strain out the sizes into small, medium large and powder.

Does the blender work on stabilized turquoise? Or just the soft natural stuff?
