Hi All,

The weather here has been overcast for awhile and today I finally got a chance to take this Shaker wall clock off the wall and photograph it outside. I've been waiting to shoot this recently finished project outside but until today weather and other things have kept me from it.

The entire clock was made from a single slab of 8/4 Maple that was 14" wide and over 8' long. Resawn from this slab and coated with 4 coats of oil base gloss poly I am pleased with the outcome. Although it looks not too bad in the photo, it looks ten times better in person, the entire clock is highly figured. The clock is 32" tall, 12" wide and 5" deep.

All the best
Gord

Very nice clock. That is on my items to build list. I just hope it comes out half as nice as yours did. :)

Is that curly or tiger stripe? Or are they synonymous?

Beautiful work, Gord...you are getting a rep around here! :)

Russ, I've always thought they were synonymous.

Gordon,

Man that is nice !! I would have probably messed it up somehow with a contrasting wood somewhere on there !

Russ, curly and tiger stripe are two different terms for the same figure in maple. There is also curl in other wood species, like cherry and walnut, but it is more common in maple.

Gord, extremely nice Shaker clock. Which plans did you use? Did you use a quartz movement, or an expensive one like Mr. Becksvoort? This project is on my list. Jason has built an excellent clock, as has Jim Becker. I'll try to build a good one in a couple years. We'll add your name to the Sawmill Creek Shaker enthusiast list. Someday we will all get together and talk Shaker furniture.

Be sure to build and post some more Shaker style stuff, I love it!

Excellant work! Curly maple is funny...it is sometimes hard to know when to add color and when to leave it natural. Natural works wondefully here...very nice curly. I like how you used what appears to me some heartwood streaked maple for the front panel...nice touch.

Hello All,

As a woodworker I feel that the highest praise that a woodworker can ever hope for is not the praise of society's elite and powerful but the praise of a woodworker's contemporaries. It is the praise of my fellow woodworkers who toil and sweat in the same environment as I do that matters to me the most and I’m grateful for all of your kind words.

All the best
Gord

Hey Gord - really nice clock. You've been holding out on us!

Catch another sunny day, and 2 to 2½ hours later than you took this photo, take another photo (at dusk), the orange and red warm tones hitting this clock would REALLY bring out the figure.
