Last week Brodie Brickley posted a picture of one of his latest turnings, a flower vase turned from aspen with a stainless steel insert. Here's a link to that thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=93827&highlight=brodie

The insert is a very cool idea. Craft Supplies USA, and others, have glass tubes available for use in flower vases, but the largest of these are only adequate for a small flower arrangement. See, for example, this glass insert from CSUSA. It's just under 2" in diameter: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Projects___Flower_Display___Flower_Vase___flower_v ase?Args= The stainless steel insert Brodie used is 4 1/2" wide and 7 1/2" deep. As you can see from the picture Brodie posted, this thing is no mere bud vase! Your wife would be able to display the 2 dozen roses you get her next Feb. 14 in a vase made with this insert. In addition, since the insert is stainless steel, there should be no worries about it breaking if the cat knocks over the flowers.

In a comment on the original thread, I asked Brodie where we could get the inserts. Since he didn't respond, I went searching. They're available on his website for $14.99. http://www.smoothturning.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=5 If you're looking for such a project, this seems like a reasonable alternative. I hope no one minds my posting this information. I'm not trying to promote Brodie's business (although I do wish him well) as much as I am trying to share with you all what I thought was an interesting idea.

I've not ordered from Brodie, but I will as soon as I get some time to get back into the shop. Right now, I've another set of tax returns to review before I can go home from the office and clean the garage. Sawmill Creek break time's over. Oh, and congrats Brodie on your 16 oz travel mug kit being picked up by WoodCraft and CSUSA. Hope you sell a ton of them.
