Do you leave the protective mask on the material when engraving and/or cutting it or do you remove the mask first?

Remove the protective coating. Etch. Mask. Then cut.
That's what works for us.

I agree with the above statements. I tried it once with the mask on and the edges did not come out very good, quite rough. Which is unlike your finished product when the mask is removed.

Ok, remove the mask it is. Now can anyone give me a hint of the power/speed settings for engraving and cutting the material with a 40 watt laser.

Don, what machine do you have?

On our Epilog 45W we use 100sp/60pwr at 300 DPI to engrave and 35sp/100pwr/2500 to cut. Masking is not much of an option when we are cutting a full sheet with complicated patterns but we definitely remove the protective plastic before engraving or cutting.

Pinnacle M Series 1 40 watt. Bought it used a couple of months ago basically for a hobby but since then I have had a lot of individuals wanting work done. Corel X3 and PhotoGrav 2.11 (sent version 3.0 back).

Hello Don.
I use similar setting as to what John uses.
My 45 watt Epilog rasters it at speed 100 power 30 for a 600 dpi engraving, I know 600 takes twice as long as a 300.
My vector settings are speed 32 power 100 and freq. 5000.
I think I will give John settings a try though, should work with mine also.

I never upgraded even though I had a $10 upgrade certificate - why did you send v3 of Photograv back?

Dave,

Maybe it was just me but I simply could not get it to work as good as 2.11 especially doing photographs on marble. I could actually get better results using the old version and the cherry material setting. I recently posted a question asking if anyone else had the same problem but never got any response. Still would like to hear other opinions.
