What is an acrylic standoff.?

AFAIK, it usually is piece of acrylic that is used to hold the engrave object away from the table when engraving. (It eliminates flashback.)

Or an acrylic piece, usually tubular, that suspends something out from another. Clear acrylic standoffs help give the illusion that a plaque or whatever is floating off the base.
