If you're in downtown SF, http://www.sfmcd.com/index.htm usually has some woodwork.
If you like Japanese hand tools, www.japanwoodworker.com

Maybe not woodworking per se, but a visit to Muir Redwoods north of Golden Gate is in order if you have never seen coastal redwoods. Quite a sight.

If you're into "tourist" things and eating Pier 39 http://www.pier39.com/ and the nearby area is worth visiting. There are many restaurants in the area to choose from. Since I haven't had a chance to go to SF in a while my favorite place to eat may not still be there.

Go to the Cable Car Museum on Mason St. It's free & really a cool place. Lot's of great old machinery and wooden cable cars.

If ya can jump over to Berkeley, I suggest checking out McBeath Hardwoods for a really good lumber yard. They're happy to let ya just walk around. They have some really nice variety if you're into wood porn :D

While in berkeley, I suggest Hida Tools http://www.hidatool.com/ - it's a little hole in the wall but it is LOADED to the gills with japanese woodworking tools. WAY better than Japan Woodworker, I feel. It's the kind of store that I would consider a "must see" if you're in the area.

I always enjoy visiting Thos. Moser's showroom when I am in DC, Chicago, or SF. I like his work, and it provides me with good ideas and inspiration.

I agree, when we lived down there I'd stop at both whenever we went to Berkeley, most often to eat at Spenger's. I hear it's changed hands and not the same as it was in the 80's though.

Just for fun you might like to take the boat out to Alcatraz for a tour. Even Chinatown might be fun if you haven't been there before.

I lived in the bay area in the early 1980's. Sometimes I would go to the Berkeley marina and get on a charter fishing boat that left at noon. Fishing on the bay as the lights on the city go on is as good as it gets... especially if you catch fish! Dress warm!!!!

If you find yourself up near Half Moon Bay, stop in Gallery M and look at some of the pieces they have for sale. They are made mostly by local craftsman many of which come from the College of the Redwoods. If you with a significant other, it's a nice little town to walk around as well.

Well, I was asking specifically for woodworking sites of interest. I know that no one has to explain why I was moved, that was clearly explained to me, but I feel that it was a woodworking related thread. I hope this one doesn’t die a quick death like the VFD thread.

Thanks,
Joe
