Anyone make the Arch-top headboard shown In WOODSMITH vol 25, #145?
Thinking of doing it in cherry but w raised panels instead of flat panels they show. You think this will work? Any tips, advice would be great!!. :) Thanks.

Jerry, I made this bed for a friend of mine. I thought it would be a piece of cake. My pride said, "Hey, it's a Woodsmith plan, how hard can it be?" How true it is that pride comes before the fall. Foturanlty my "fall" didn't include any major mistakes, just a good dose of humility when I began to see how much time it would take to get the curve just right and then get everything to perfectly match the curve. It took some time, but it was rewarding in the end.

The biggest problem that I had was making sure that the vertical pieces met perfectly with the curve of the cross pieces. Other than this, everything went pretty good. This style of furniture dosen't turn my crank, but I really, really like the way it came out.

As far as the panels, I'm sure you can do it the way you suggest and it will look just fine. I don't recall why they did it this way. It's been close to a year since I built it. But if I can be of any help, just drop me a note. Have fun!

Jason

Edit: P.S. Here's a couple links to some other furniture that I built to match the set adapted from some other Woodsmith plans so that you can see what would match the bed. <A HREF="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=5192" TARGET="_blank">Chest of Drawers</A></EM></font>, <A HREF="http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=5967" TARGET="_blank">End Table</A></EM></font>

This is not the bed in Woodsmith, but one I modified from Workbench Magazine. Since you said you wanted Cherry and Raised Panels, I thought I would post this for your consideration. It's solid Figured Cherry.Have a great day.

Jason, Thanks much for your quick, informative reply! Great job and I've looked @ your other projects on your site. You are indeed blessed and talented!! Looks to me like you've been at this quite some time based on your results!! Your Arch Headboard turned out great but I, of course, am being dumb and want to do raised panels w traditional rail/stile. I'm sure it can be done but have concerns about routing the fits w the challenging angles and curves. Later, I'll probably be asking your advice on finishing cherry. In any case, terrific work and thanks for your response. Your fine work/craftmanship on your projects has my respect!! Jerry

Chris Thanks much I will be doing raised panel but (see above) in an arched/curved frame set up which gives me the concern. Thanks again for your F/U. You live in one of my favorite parts of country! (N.C.) Jerry

Jason, any chance you still have the magazine or the article about the bed? I've got the plans, but think it might make sense to read the article first...as I've never done an arched headboard. Thank you. Charlie Christian (nicknurse1@yahoo.com)
