The customer is an avid bowler and a deer hunter. His pens are cartridges done in bowling ball blanks.

Comments welcome.

Grant,

I'm sure your customer will love them. Can you point me to a "how-to" on making these cartridge pens? I've a BIL and a client that are both avid hunters. I'd like to make some for them.

Grant - what a great way to combine your client's interests! I'm sure he will show them off every chance he gets! Nice work!

Very nice. I have a friend that also uses spent ammo brass to make pens. I have not had the pleasure to see any, but I just sent him 300 rounds of .308 brass. Should keep him busy for a little while:D

Thanks for all your kind words. I delivered them today, and he now wants 6 more! That would be great if they weren't so darned time consuming to make. I just need to get more efficient.

David: There is no how-to that I am aware of. I wrecked a dozen or so before getting to where I am now. I've written my "notes to me" so that I can now repeat these. I'll try to put them in tutorial form and post it.

I'm going to guess .243 caliber...approx 65gr Hollow point bullet profile.
Case looks too large in dia for a .223 (plus not a lot of deer hunters like that small of a round), and the bullet looks too short and small in diameter for a 7mm or 30 cal. :D

David - for you and all those interested in 'How-To' make bullet pens, the latest issue of Woodturning Design (Fall 2008, Issue #19) has a step by step article on bullet pens. Should answer just about all your questions!

That is really sweet! And a really good idea.

David: I know nothing at all about ammunition. I bought the casings and the bullets at a local hunting supply store. The cartridge is a Winchester Win 270. That likely means more to you than to me. The bullet is just a standard copper/lead bullet. It wasn't a hollow point. I cut the bullet at just after the taper on the "powder" end, then melt out the lead.
