Has anyone purchased any lumber from Upsome Lumber before? I found him advertising on Craigslist in Chicago and was thinking about taking a trip up to pick up some lumber. His prices seem very reasonable and worth the trip, just wanted to know if anyone had any experience.

PM John Milunus and see if he's familiar with the place.

That is not too far from me--perhaps I can run over there this week and get back to you.

I could use some 5/4 cherry. I'll look for the ad you mention.

Greg,

The link to his site is:

If you want his e-mail address PM me, the one on his site he told me not to use.

I am thinking that buying lumber from him will be a good excuse for me to get a jointer and planer.

Thanks--I'll give him a call tomorrow or Wednesday and take a look.

I have been shying away from small mills like this one though as I have not been 100% satisfied, and there are many larger mills in Wisconsin that sell for the same price. These small mills don't always dry the wood very well, often don't cut off the splits on the ends of the wood from drying before sale, and tend to grade their lumber better than it really is.

Here is a larger mill that may even be closer to you depending where you live.

I use these guys for 8/4 and 5/4 stock, but they often don't have enough stock on hand to fill my orders, so I have been shopping elsewhere for 4/4 stock. Also, they seperate the clear white maple from their regular maple, and charge significantly more for this. A normal mill would not do this. Thus, this is more of a "boutique" mill as I call it, catering to the hobbiest.

Best,
Greg

Greg,

I PM'd John Milunas like Jim said, he has shopped with Upsome before and said they were pretty good. When I sent him an e-mail I think I got a response the next day.

Hi guys,

I certainly don't mean to hijack this thread or steer anyone away from Upsome, I just wanted to let you know of another supplier in the general area of southern WI. A couple hours south of Upsome Lumber in NW IL is a wonderful, "shangri-la-like" mill called Johnson Creek Hardwoods. I don't have any affiliation other than I have bought hundreds of board feet of lumber and could not be happier with my experience. Link attached.
