I am in the process of building a jewelry box with frame and panel construction. Think of the sides and back like at frame and panel cabinet door. The sides are taller than wide so I will have the grain running up and down. My question is- On the back the panel is wider than tall. Do I run the grain up and down to match the sides or do I run the grain left to right so the grain runs with the widest part of the panel?

I'd run the grain to match the sides. It will look better. Also, the point of frame & panel construction was originally to account for expansion & contraction of the wood. So even though it will move more, it shouldn't hurt. I'd use the little foam pad things inside the frame grooves to suck up that movement.

I would make all the grain match directions in the panels.
