I'm looking for a source of string inlay. Yes, I know I could probably make it myself, but I would rather spend the time applying it than making it. I was advised to check out Dover Inlay, but they seem to have vanished. Does anyone have other suggestions for sources?

Ellen, one source with limited species would be Constatines. For instance, here is a link to the Maple:

http://www.constantines.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1238

Good prices, limited species. Might work for your needs, though. Note that the other species are buried in the link at the top for "Inlay Borders".

I always just make mine. It's easier and of course if I make a mistake, I can match the color easier (as long as I have more of the same species).

Take care, Mike

btw, Dover Inlay Mfg.'s web domain shows it still active/registered through 2014. So their site might just be down.

You could try giving them a call on Monday.

Although I'm not absolutely sure, I think Dover is out of business. Back in March people were saying they couldn't reach them. Try Inlay Products World (http://www.inlays.com/). I haven't ordered from them but some other people have recommended them.

for " acutemarquetry " it should come up at the top of the list with a web site. This guy also sells on ebay (also under the same name). Very good prices and quality products. All types of stringing and inlays. Check him out.

The quality of the stringing and other inlays from both Dover and Constantine went downhill a long time ago; both, as far as I know, sold some version of "whitewood" in place of boxwood or holly, but it wasn't the same.

Try these folks in England:

I bought from another supplier some years ago, in London, I think; if I can remember their name I'll post it.

If you want a local source, you can buy stringing inlay from Rob Millard. I would doubt anyone would have more expertise in making and applying this sort of ornamentation...

David,

Thanks. Do you have an address or web site?

His website is www.americanfederalperiod.com (http://www.americanfederalperiod.com), and that will have his e-mail address. I believe he also posts to this forum, so you should be able to look up his id and send him a private message.
