I have some restoration work to do on a bell tower -- I live in a historic district so things must be done correctly.

One of the boards that is bad is about 15 inches wide and about one inch thick and about 12 feet long - the others are only about five inches wide and five feet long.

The vast majority of the structure is in great shape for being built in 1873 -- I can not tell what the wood is but I am wondering if it is white oak -- from reading the other thread.

Was white oak used for painted wood structures -- I have some trim on the house that is mahogany -- this is not that. This wood is so old that it has turned almost black and is very hard!

But I have no idea what to use?
