Well today in the shop, while rounding a very large (for me) 17" x 6" walnut blank I managed to disintegrate the entire upper guide assembly on a 55 year old 14 inch Boice Crane bandsaw. I will try to locate one in some of the old tool forums but I think I am doomed to failure. Now the silver lining. I think I am shopping for a new bandsaw, yehaaaaaaaa. I did some looking today and I am debating between the Grizzly GO457 and the Rikon 10-325. The prices are roughly the same. I like the cutting capacity. The Rikon is a 1 1/2 horse vs the 2 horse Grizz. Anyone have an opinion on either of these or have other suggestions. I am looking for at least eight inch cut height in a 14 inch saw and a thousand bucks is pretty much max

Earl,

I'm sorry to hear about your bandsaw woes but I certainly appreciate you positive attitude that you are displaying as a result!

I don't have any experience with either bandsaw you are considering as a replacement so I can't comment. I'm sure others with experience will add information as both of those bandsaws are popular.

Sorry to hear about your problems. Glad you're taking it so well. :D I'm dumb on this, but I'll be watching this thread with interest. I'm thinking about getting a real bandsaw to replace my old crapsman 12".

I can not speak for either of these saws but if all else was the same I would go with the bigger HP. I bought a Steel City table saw a year ago and could kick myself for not getting the 3 HP.

Earl my brother has this one and he loves it. It is a nice unit. Bigger at 12" resaw and 16 1/4" table at 2 hp plus two 4" dust ports.

I would echo any and all comments to get resaw height and more power.

Well in the drag racin' world they say there is no subsitute for HP like cubic inches, and of course Tim the tool man would say " more power" and I hafta agree on the larger hp band saw, especally for nearly the same price, too bad it is not Made in USA tho.....:(

I briefly worked at Woodcraft and really liked the 14"Deluxe Rikon we had in the classroom- lots of height and really nice to work with.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I think it is the Grizz if it is one of these two. Bernie I looked at the 513 and I have to admit I am giving it another look. The only reason I have so far thought of staying at 14 inch is the cast iron wheels. The 17 inch is nice and it has 2 more inches of height capability. I guess I was worried about a 17 inch saw being cheaper than a 14 inch saw from a robust design standpoint but I am having second thoughts. By the way I still cannot get my posts or reply's to have paragraphs is there a secret ?

Keep an eye open on the forum classifieds, CL, Epay and the local paper for a used BS.
This one a Grizzly 17" 2HP was listed on another forum and was local to me.

Hardly used clean as the day it was uncrated. Seller was asking $550.00, I negotiated it too,$450.00 with a couple extra blades.

Check this thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=68892

It has links to various other BS threads. The Rikon is mentioned in a few, not sure of the specific Grizz.

I want to thank you all for the help in making a decision on a new bandsaw. Scott and Bernie I decided to go with a GO513X2, Ebay (Grizzauction) had one at 895 plus 96 for shipping. I hope to have the saw sometime next week, I will let you all know how the install goes.
