cake topper help needed

Hi all. Need to make some cake toppers, not quite clear on how I can widen the outline of a letter, without having to manually move each anchor point. The font I need to use is Benjamin, in particlular the letter A. It has some very narrow areas that I would like to widen. Of course if this works out ok, I would like to do other letters, but would not want to have to manually edit each one.

Do a contour around the letters, then break apart and delete the original letter.
