I am stumped. What is it and what does one do with it~?

It's called a Canterbury. That however tells me nothing
Google has a few pictures of canterbury's / canteburies ( what's the plural of Canterbury)

I see.
The HUGE one I saw in MALLET's auction site was maybe for really large publications like sheet music etc.


Until I saw one in scale with other items that gave it perspective I thought it was maybe 3 or 4 feet high.
I was scratching my head.

It would seem that this piece of furniture has run the gamut from large to small and has been around for a very long time.

The photo of the Aesthetic Movement Canterburys could well be a newspaper racks; sometimes they're designed to hold removable rods or blades that the papers are draped over. The curved-top sides in Cliff's first examples are decorative but wouldn't suit draped newspapers.

A Canterbury is a very English item, like fireplace fenders.
