I was hollowing ornaments and kind of buggered up the opening on one so that the piece of wood I had for the finial and icicle wasn't going to be big enough. So rather than throw it out and waste the time it took to cut and glue it up, I made a collar to fit the oversized hole. Well, I liked the look enough that I decided to make a couple more the same way. So the first one (that I screwed up) is cherry and padauk, then some sheoak and walnut, and walnut and maple.

Absolutely beautiful. The detail throughout is fantastic. I can only dream of finials like those. Time to head out to the shop and try spindle turning again. Thanks for the inspiration.

Those are exquisite to my old eyes. I would love to put many of them on my xmas tree. I don't know that I would have the patience to turn something like that. Or the talent for that matter. I saw a gentleman display some at the St. Louis / Collinsville wood show a couple of years ago. I never got around to asking him what they sell for. Has anyone made a small display tree to keep them out all year in a display case?

Absolutely beautiful ornaments Curt! Love your designs, detail work and wood combinations! I think I actually prefer your design modification (collars) as it adds to the layered/segmented look! I hope you will be posting some more of these beauties! Always a treat!

Thanks for the nice comments.
Brian, the avatar is a picture of a pet mule that has grown up in the pasture next to my house for the last year. He's like a big old dog that comes up and rubs and nuzzles. The heart breaker is that his owner just sold him last weekend.

Curt, these are really great. I like them much better than the "standard" ball type for sure!

A design opportunity that you took advantage of and turned out some really great ornaments.
