I have a new mortise guage. I also am not sure in its proper use. It has two pins that adjust and a lone pin on the opisit side. I need to have a 2 3/4" x 3/8" through mortise centered on 1 1/2' stock. How do I go about marking it up?

Most times I get my 3/8" chisel and set the two points with the chisel..

Then measure from the fence to closest pin 9/16"

3/8 - 1 1/2= 1 1/8

1 1/8" divided by 2 = 9/16"

I then make a mark from both sides to test I am on center..

Most times your mortice is not on center and you should treat all marks you make on other componets as if they are not on center and use the sides of other componets in case your off center a little...

I use the single pin is used for single lines..
