Hi all - I've kind of taken a shine to the Record hand planes (must be the blue) and would like to know more about them. Anyone have any info or know of a site that would have info about their history and how to tell the type & age of the planes?

So far I've got a 9-1/2 block plane, an 04 that I prefer to my Bailey Sweetheart, a 5-1/2, and an 06. I hope to eventually grab an 03 and an 07 to round out the line up.

TIA!

I have the same pair, been useing them for years, The 4 is looking minty but the blue is mostly gone form use on the block plane.
Cheers Ron.

All I know is the ones with SS on the lever cap are pretty old and have the two piece cap irons (chipbreakers) that Clifton now uses..

Woodcraft has a book called Planecraft (http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=3421) by C.W. Hampton and E. Clifford that goes for about $12. The book is mostly a general reference and how-to for doing things, but with special emphasis on doing these things with Record planes. There's a lot of pictures in there of the many different planes that Record has made over the years.

Thanks for the responses guys. It's very much appreciated. Michael, I'm about due for a trip to Woodcraft, so I may be checking out that book very soon.

I bought my 7 from a guy who had three of them and a bunch of other Record planes. He said he was working on a type study for Record. I don't know that he's published anything on paper or on the web, but I could probably get hold of him if that would help you.

You probably already know this, but here's (http://www.geocities.com/plybench/record.html) a page on BugBear's website that shows all the planes that seem to be unique to Record, like the plough planes and shoulder planes. It won't help much with the Record 04 or other Record bench planes, which was for the most part a Stanley Bailey clone.

I wasn't aware of that...interesting even if the bench planes aren't listed. Thanks!

Thanks for the offer John, but since it's just based out of curiosity, I'd had for anyone to go to any trouble...
