I would have preferred a 3/4 in round knob, but that is a personnel preference. Did you turn the Lid? :)

Nice piece Steve ! I like the idea of the see thru lid for a candy bowl. And, yes I want to know as well as to how you did the lid.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I do appreciate it!

I had some 3/8" Plexiglass left over from an old project and just cut out what I needed and turned to shape. Drilled a small hole (later used for the finial) and a small bolt and nutt to secure the Plexi to a Jacobs chuck. Used a bowl gouge to shape the piece and does it ever give off the fine stringy stuff! Sanded it to 400 and then Bealle buffed out all of the remaining scratches giving it a true glass like appearance.

Steve,

I like your lidded candy bowl very much. I've been considering doing something similar for my office, but I hadn't thought of using a clear plastic lid. Thanks for the idea. Without a clear lid, you're dependent on a visitor being curious enough to lift the lid to learn that there's candy available.

One question: Have you considered turning a scoop for the candy? I have an un-lidded candy bowl sitting on my desk. Because of concerns about dust and such, the bowl is reserved for wrapped candy. (It's filled with Rollos; something I can resist.) A lidded bowl would allow unwrapped candies, but I think you'd want a spoon or scoop so people wouldn't need to touch the candies with their fingers.

Glad you liked the bowl David!

As far as a scoup - while I am sure one could be turned without a problem, to me it opens more problems than addresses. I suppose that the candy you offer would determine the actual size of the scoup. Where would you store the scoup? What keeps dirty fingers off the scoup as well as the candy? I plan on sticking with wrapped candies and hope the bowl will entice folks to check it out.

That's cool Steve. I didn't realize you could turn and polish plexiglass on a lathe. That opens up a lot of possibilities.

Steve,
You are a real innovator. I am sure as I grow, as a turner, I will someday want to copy the idea of your candy dish. As you know copying is the best form of flattery. ( Unless you get sued) LOL. You took a nice piece of Maple and made it really standout with the plexi top and finial. Great work as always.

Plexiglas, good grief another new idea. I gotta start making notes.

I think it is an outstanding candy dish.

Hi Steve, first off you did a marvelous job on the bowl and the finish, very nice finial also, I would think there'd be no problem lifting the lid with that finial.
Great job on the Plexi also, it does look like glass, and it goes well with the overall looks of the bowl.

I was just wondering, to get a domed lid, would it be very difficult to heat and shape a piece of plexiglass, to turn a domed lid and then polish would be another way I suppose, maybe one of these days I will try that, if I ever catch up

It looks from the photos to be much smaller than 7 3/4'' Neat idea with the P.glass, the bowl has a glassy look to it as well. nice job. Keith

Outstanding Steve, very will done indeed! The final is spot on and the pg is perfect for letting one see how much chocolate candy is left in the bowl !!!!! I like it very much !

Wow Steve, Great job! I never would have thought you could turn plexi. In fact I kept thinking you shaped the bowl around a piece of plexi that you found. Seeing stuff like this inspires me to try new things and practice as much as I can.
