Giant Cedar log, but no photos - no wood, either...

Just wanted to express how disappointed I was two days ago when I went to the county dump / mulching center to get rid of some old, rotten firewood. To my delight, and utter disappointment, ultimately, I saw a tree someone had dropped off for disposal. It was an Aromatic, Eastern Cedar, every bit of 30 inches in diameter, the largest piece of which was a good 9 feet long. There was no way I was going to get that beauty into my pickup, but I did manage a couple of 3 foot sections which are considerably smaller around. Imagine how old that tree was - I wonder why it was cut down. It would have made magnificent table tops and other projects - I'll see if I can make some bowls and other things from what I found. I'll post a pic or two of the logs after Tropical Storm Hanna leaves, and it dries out around here a little. Mike

depending on how far you have to go, you could hook a chain to it, and drag it home, just have some one drive behind you, like a convoy, or escort.

I appreciate the thought, but 4 miles or so down a paved state 2 lane highway would probably net me a well sanded down log, and a ticket from the police! I think, anyway, hehe. Mike :D

or, if you "pull" a truck behind you, the tension would keep the wood off the ground, and you could tell the officer that you are just pulling a truck, and the wood helps keep the distance between.....................

ok so my log calulator says if it is 30x9'x33 on the large end you get about 2400 lbs.soo build an arch for it .
we have one here from the old farmin days . simple device. U shaped metal with solid mount wheels on the legs. then a tongue out the front. has a small handwinch . you run the cable under the log and back up to the frame and winch it off the ground. second part is a hitch on a tongue with a V cradle for the log to set into . you chain / spike this on and then hook it up to the truck. add lights and you are legal. ( provocative .. but legal) daddy brought home 36 ft 6x12's for the A frame way back when with this . ( and a dumptruck since there were 8 per load)
