For really light scraping (say to take off some minor mill marks), do you guys ever use a scraper with no burr at all; just jointed?

Any success/failure stories on doing so?

No...I don't quite understand this. Scraping already barely takes any depth off the surface....I've never measured but I'd gather a 1 mil thick card scraper shaving is a bit thick.

Yes, for flattening shellac or brushed lacquer I'll use a card scraper with no hook to level the surface before using sandpaper.

The scraper needs a least a sharp square edge. If the edge is round then what you have is a burnisher and that's not what you want. Sharp square edge, verrrry fine scrapings, burred edge, very fine scrapings.

Lee valley just came out with super thin scrapers. They reccomend using them without the burr. Heres a link to them

My uncle's boatyard used to recycle old handsaw blades into thin, unhooked scrapers using a shear. Excellent to remove the orange peel from a bad coat of varnish while still saving the coat.
