An old walnut log that I found had some nice figuring but was not large enough to make a bowl or platter because of cracks and decay. This is a sushi plate for a wedding gift.

6 1/2" x 9" sanded to 400 grit and one coat light oil.

That's absolutely wonderful! I've wanted to do some of these for some time now...and hope when I do, that they turn out (as it were...) as good as yours!

I really like the shape, especially the corners. I mean REALLY like it. I am definitely going to try one sometime. Awesome job!

Sorry; bad photos, the back is a dark figured walnut, the top has an almost black figure portion in the center and the lighter colors around the edges. The colors are pretty unique now that you mention it.

Thanks all for you comments. I have turned three of these now and they are kinda fun. Go for it they do make great gifts.

Kim,

Very, Very, Very neat.... and I love sushi. I'm going to try and do something like that and I'd be very happy if it came out 1/3 as nice as yours.

I'm no photo expert, just a point and shoot ametuer. The clue on these pix is the different background colors. I agree with you that figured walnut can display differant shades under differant light, but I can't help wonder if one of the photo guys won't weigh in here and tell us both the problem.:):)
