After some urging from another member I'm posting some pics of my latest project. In an effort to offset some heating bills this winter, SWMBO and I decided to install a high efficiency wood fireplace. Except for some small trim items left to be done like floor & wall trim, its pretty well done and ready to burn. I had my dealer set it and vent it and my FIL and myself did the site prep and the finish work. First time ever working with stone & tile though, that was a learning experience to say the least. We're pretty pleased with it except for those issues that only the person doing the project will ever see:rolleyes:

The unit is a BSI Ultima http://www.securitychimneys.com/pages/fireplace/high_BisUltima.asp?country=us

And the stone came from Wisconsin Pride Stone. Products, price & service are 1st rate. The stone I used was a brand new product not listed on the web site yet. In fact I think I was the second order for it.

Hope you like them.

Nice work.

Did you put the front tile directly on the plywood? I like the look of the stone. I bet that was a pain to grout and mortar in.

Nice project. Practical and functional with nice aesthetic appeal.

The tile is mounted on 1/4" Hardibacker. For the stone, wire mesh nailed to OSB then just butter the stone like brick and work it into the mesh and it just sticks right there, a few of the heavier pieces we braced with screws underneath them for a day then removed them. It took us about 8 hours to lay the stone and about 4 hours to run the grout bag and work the mortar in. Not too bad for a couple guys that never worked with this before. Real familiar with concrete, block and brick but cultured stone is a bit different.

Not something we see here that often. Very cool, if I can use that word in this context.

Matt, glad you posted the pics and interesting to see the framing, etc. As noted previously, very fine work!! The coloration on the stone, by the way, is very close to the stone I used.

it appears not to be centered in the wall

Thats because its not, space considerations required me to alter the angle a bit. Its as close as I could make it.
