I'll be computer-free for a week while my wife and I go camping in the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz, CA. This is our 30th Anniversary and we are repeating our honeymoon camping spot.

I remember decades ago that when we traveled Hwy 1 or 101 we would see Redwood sales stands where you could get small burls for coffee tables all the way to 8-foot across burls for tables. I assume they no longer exist because there is only so much old-growth forest to produce them.

Does anyone know where to go in the California Coastal area to see (not to buy) huge burls already made into furniture? The one I remember is the "Greens" restaurant in San Francisco.

See you next week.

I was going to suggest Ventana Inn, in Big Sur, but it was closed by the fire in July.

One border of Henry Cowell is CA 9. If you take it north for a few miles, you'll find a few stands which have been selling chainsaw sculptures, often in redwood.

If you have time, you might consider going up to Mendocino and environs. Krenov's program at the College of the Redwoods has seeded the area with many fine woodworkers. For instance, there are several galleries in Mendocino with gorgeous stuff. That whole region of the coast is gorgeous too.

Thinking of woodworking galleries, there's a good one in Half Moon Bay, which is a shorter drive up 1 from Santa Cruz. http://www.gallerym.net/
