Nice. I've always wanted to get some of that finish and play with it... but man it's $pendy.... Looking good on that carving!

Shaker Style Cradle out of Cherry all cut on CNC.

I posted details of this project over in the design forum (where I had ask for some input)

Is a link OK here or should I repost it? (isn't double posting frowned upon?)

Here's a vacuum formed product I designed and machined for a customer. Plugs were machined from MDF and then Duraglassed to create prototype tooling. This plastic version is still in development. Once nailed down, the plugs will be cast at a foundry out of aluminum.

My most difficult project to date, although the difficulty had nothing to do with woodworking. I made this for my mother who passed away suddenly two weeks ago.

They are half that James if you care for a bit of assembly yourself. PM sent. I DIY most of mine but there are awesome kits out there now. And yes - mine is based on a Bart Dring Ordbot Hadron build. I also use a arduino mega 2560/Ramps/pololu sterrer setup with LCD to decouple mine from teh computer - it prints standalone. I also use a panucatt helios heated bed, and 30amp 12V power supply from ebay. My extruder and hot end are a QU-BD MBE extruder that has been modded with a minimalistic MK7 tensioner, MK7 gear, and athe barrel modded for PTFE Teflon tube. It is super reliable. That horse was a 9.5 hour continuous print in 1.75mm ABS.

Mike...
I m real interested in the 3D printing for small parts. Like the filament color too! In pic #3, post #74 of the horse, I appears there is some "thermal curl". Am I seeing this right, and if so, is it the norm?

Mike Heidrick
12-01-2013, 5:01 PM
Rate of cooling, bed temp, the fact that it is ABS, and the method of "sticking the work" can affect curl. That was a 9 hour print so some of the upper layers cooled mid thigh of the horse and caused the shrinkage. It was still plenty stuck down as teh base was so large but I did get that curl. PLA material does not have the shrinkage problem of ABS. 3D printing is far more finicky than CNC routing for sure.

Those look great Mike. I've done a small amount of cutting of 1/8" alu on my DIY machine and hope to do more.

If you don't mind sharing, what kind of speeds and feeds did you use and what bit?

thanks!

Mike Heidrick

Try a 63-600 series O flute Onsurd bit for alum. Awesome. This was cut using the 63-620 - its about $30. Cut at 50ipm with a few spritz of WD40 - mostly dry though.

I've had this slab carved for over a year and finally decided to put some stain on it. I still have another one I carved about the same time with a different design. I need to get some stain on it too. First time I've used white paint to lighten up the tummy and butt. Not sure I'll do that again. It's about 12 x 22 x 1.5 thick. The slab had some "issues" but it carved ok. We have a herd of antelope about two miles from the house. It's fun to watch them run along side the jeep.
