New to turning at least with my own set up. I need a grinder and a jig to sharpen things. What should I get?
I know this is very vague I did decide agenst the tormek for now.

A lot of people use the low-speed grinder from Woodcraft, but just about any grinder will do, as long as it has decent wheels. The low speed isn't critical if you're using high-speed steel tools. For the jig, I'd suggest the Wolverine or the PSI clone. A lot of people have also made their own version of the Wolverine out of either metal or wood.

Jason,
The slowspeed grinder at Woodcraft is on sale right now IIRC for $79. That with the Wolverine jig system is all I use.

Jason,
A larger diameter wheel gives less of a hollow grind on the bevel, so if I had my choice I'd go for an 8" or 7" over a 6" wheel grinder. Slower speed is nice but not critical; same with jigs -- they're nice but in no way essential to getting good results. Freehand with a light touch can work fine.
