View Full Version : My first mantel...

Hello everybody,
I thought I would post two pictures of a mantel I just built for my daughter. She wanted to paint it, so it is made from poplar. The nice thing about a painted surface is that I have discovered "there is no gap too large for dap!"

This is a 'from scratch' design of my own, and my first attempt at building and installing a mantel. My daughter was pleased with the results, but then she is predjudiced toward the woodworker. That is her daughter (my granddaughter) on the mantel. It is 80" long, so there is plenty of room.

Thanks for looking!

I'm not biased toward the woodworker and I think it looks great. Beautiful Granddaughter as well. Very nice job. You are right, paint and caulk can hide a multitude of sins. Lars

Nice job Warren! I've built a couple mantles. Once you've done a couple, they go together pretty fast. Cute picture with your granddaughter! Todd

The mantle is super! And that second picture is darling...I suspect that the photo will become a family heirloom, too...

Warren,

Really nice job on the mantle - both design and execution. I got a chuckle out of your grandaughter's picture - wasn't quite expecting her to be ON the mantle! :D

Very nice!

Now, were you trying to show off your grandaughter, or were you trying to show us that not only does it look nice, but it is built well too?!... :p :D

Warren, thanks for posting the pics. I am underway with a garage renovation that will be turned into a rec style room and it will be getting a ventless propane fireplace in it and I intend on building my own hearth and surround and you have given me some great ideas. Looks super!
