I had a winning ticket tonight at our clubs raffle and this gouge was still on the table so i took it. I've been looking at some gouges priced at $80 and up so this is a steel. This is high carbon steel so it should get scary sharp! Just needs to be sharpened more. It is a Buck Bros. Does anyone know if this is an older "good one"? I read that the newer buck bros stuff is crap.

Andrew the best way to find out is to use it, but make sure you don't get the steel hot while grinding, if you have a wet wheel to sharpen the gouge that would be the ticket.
otherwise very short times on the a grinder and cool it in water, as often as it takes, if it gets blue, you ruined the part that got blue .

Yes you can get them scary sharp but like Leo said keep water close and don't let the metal get blue.

Andrew, that appears to be a spindle roughing gouge for rounding off blanks to cylinders for spindle turning. If you did not have one that should work well for you. Be sure not to use it on a bowl as the tang will likely break or bend when you get a catch.

I have a bowl gouge, i've really wanted a new larger and nicer roughing gouge.
