Where can I find information about lofting? Specifically how to do it. I want to start with a design and figure out the cut sheet dimensions. I've looked around and can only find a few books that mention it. I bought one, then found out it only had some vague reference to the process.

Hopefully the link below works. Mystic Seaport sells one or two manuals dedicated to lofting. One is called lofting.

Looked up the manual Mystic Seaport offers.

Charlie,

Take a look at this site:
http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/

Nick Shade gives some pretty good instructions in his book on strip built kayaks. I believe there are some lofting figures on the website also.

I found this,

Glen Smith a moderator at Bear Mountain Boats forum posted this, I found it very helpful.

Gary,

Thanks for that link. Very useful. I'm planning to start on one of Nick Shade's kayaks, perhaps as early as this fall. I have all the offsets out of his book, but had no luck in finding graph paper large enough to do the lofting. This looks very helpful.

Lon,
I used gridded easel pad, 1" grid. I found it at Staples. I used a clean sheet for each station much less confusing that way.

Good Luck,
Gary

Hi Charlie,

This article from Svenson's boat plans might give you some additional information:

Gary,

Excellent idea. I forgot that the gridded easel pads were available. Yes, that will make it quite simple, doing a separate page for each station...and large enough to draw the entire station on one page, instead of only drawing half.

...on my way to the office supply store!!!!

Buy John Gardner's The Dory Book for a good primer.

That's a great link Bob. Refreshes my memory. Spent a week at Bob Prothro's school back in the early 80's when he was still teaching there and this was one of the classes we took.

If you have access to CAD (AutoCAD, Generic CAD, Turbo CAD, etc.) you can draw the stations in CAD and send them to a local drafting house (usually by email) who will plot them out for you full size. I 'lofted' and drew up Nick's Guillemot and had them plotted for less than $20.

PM me if you would like more info.
