I have a chance to buy a used G-1079R 16" drum sander. The spec say it can go down to 1/4" thickness. I want to sand 3/32 to 1/8 stock down to 1/16".
Is it possible to place the stock on a 3/4" carrier with double back tape and run it through a drum sander??
Thanks for your help.

I have done it without any problems.

Yup, works fine. I have also used a board with PSA sand paper and skipped the double stick tape, but run a few careful test before trying that for safety.

It might even be possible to sand it down that much without a carrier. My delta sands down to at least 3/64" even though it specs at 1/8". It's not really clear to me what determines how low you can go with a given model. As long as the drum doesn't contact the bed surface, you should be ok.

Agree with Jim. Just don't let that drum contact the drive belt or you will be sorry... But with that said, I would probably use a carrier on the thicknesses you mentioned as metioned by others.

Sarge..
