Hey everyone.
I got a fish tank stand from someone for free.

I started messing with it and this is what I came up with.

The next day I started work on a canopy for the stand. I wanted to match the bottom so didn't go to fancy.

I need to finish it off some how, poly or tung oil or such.

Please let me know what you think. I am pretty happy with it. I made the doors myself, made the trim, replaced some pieces and did this and that here and there.

Thanks for looking.

Beautiful refurbish! would not even guess it was the same piece. what did you use to take the paint off?

Much better look than the painted version. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. Now I just fell bad for posting. The doors are not attached or anything. The whole problem is I have not decided what kind of finish to use.

I justed paint remover, paint scraper, and sand paper. Nothing worked as well as the sand paper.

Better be something that will stand up to water pretty well. At least the top portion anyways. Evaporation will gather on the walls inside the top, and there will be quite a bit of it. Even with that big cutout you have in the back. You can put some sort of fan in there, like a PC fan, which would help to some extent. Not sure as I've never done it myself, but I would think it would be rather significant. May not help as much on yours with that large of a cutout in back.

What I did with mine was to put a thin layer of silicon all over the inside of the top case, with a thicker layer over joints and corners. Has held up pretty well over the last 5 years or so.

Radek, nice job on the stand. I finished mine about 10+ years ago with several coats of lacquer and it has stood up well. Poly will also work well. You need something that will handle getting wet – and it will get wet. I would not use tung oil to finish it with.

i stained then used poly on the one that i built. poly will stand up to the water
