Wondering if anyone can identify this old tool. It's overall length is about 5". My guess is that it's some kind of early seam ripper.
Thanks,
Ken

It looks like an upholstery tack puller that someone may have modified to make a modern staple puller.

Cant tell from the pics, but if the cross-section is flat, then it is likely a swan-neck chisel for cleaning the bottom of mortices; if the cross-section is curved, then it may be a spoon gouge for carving.

Inlay channel clearing chisel.

It seems rather short for a swan neck chisel. Given the "edge" I would agree that it is an upholstery tack puller that has been filed for another purpose.

Nice handle. I think I will save the photo as a pattern.

Hi Ken,

A close up picture of the end might help identify it.

Maybe something out of a farrier's kit?

Depending on how the end looks, my guess is some sort of carving tool.

I'll try to post better images later.

I'd agree with Tom V. I've got something that looks very similar, inherited from my grandfather, no idea what it is--but he was a horse guy. Lots of leather tools, shoe nails, etc.
